Theatre!

Hey Guys,

I have a question. I don't know if anyone can help me with this but I thought I'd give it a shot. i have the opportunity to do poster designs for a theater. They got back to me and asked me what I wanted for compensations and said they have a "minimal budget" for "these kinds of things". Has anyone ever done poster designs? Or knows how I should go about configuring an estimate?

I know this is the hardest part what we have to do.

Thanks everyone!

Hi Ashley, this sounds like a pretty sweet gig! Poster design is always fun. As for the fee, here's my take on it:

I really think it's up to them to tell you what they can afford, even if their budget is minimal; I feel like it would be hard to give a reasonable estimate without knowing the client's budget first. If they can't give you a number, maybe you could give them a price based on the number of hours you spend on the poster(s)...

I can't say that I have a lot of experience with this sort of thing, but I hope this helps you out for whatever its worth.

Good luck!

Hey Ashley,

obviously it depends directly on how much work it will be. guess the amount of hours it will take you, and aiming a little high, name a price. say its negotiable so as to be flexible. have a "lowest price" in your head that you will go.

if its going to be alot of work, with several stages of sketches/comps, maybe up front talk about compensation for each stage of the project, so as not to lose. write a simple contract for this stuff.

Boston Lyric Opera paid Laura $1000, and they are non-profit. Get as much out of them as you can!

Thans everyone.

It's very nerve wracking to ask for money. haha. Thanks for the support. I'm still in negotiations with them. After my last email they said they would take a closer look at my work and then let me know what they need. So obviously they are interested enough to be willing to negotiate.

And I am VERY excited about the chance to do posters for theatre. I hope I get more opportunities like it.

Thanks again! You guys are the man...collectively. :)

Thanks again everyone!

Nothing is finalized at the moment. I"m still waiting to hear back from the theater about their final decision. If they decide not to use me, I'll be disapointed but I'm also still applying to other theatre.

Thanks for the support! I"ll keep you posted.
